BBC Prison Tour January 2007

There are more than 85,000 prisoners in about 160 jails in the UK.

The vast majority of them are in England and Wales, where more than 77,000 prisoners are currently held. While prisons vary, the majority of the 130,000 people entering the system each year - many for just weeks or months - will find similar facilities.

The BBC News website took a tour of Chelmsford Prison, to see how a jail works.
